The concert strength of the Orchestra is about 40 players, of whom about 75% are experienced amateur musicians from Luton and nearby towns and villages. The remainder are visiting players who may travel up to 40 miles to join the orchestra for concerts.

Membership of the orchestra is open to anyone who has achieved the necessary competence on an instrument provided there is a vacancy in the section concerned. No auditions take place but attendance at rehearsals is expected and it is at the discretion of the Conductor and Leader whether players are of a sufficient standard to take part in the concerts. Each member is also required to pay an annual subscription of £18 with concessions (£9) for students and senior citizens.
